Wow! Just received this great review about Paige Maple one of the stylists at our salon. This is great for a young stylist to see and feel. Thank you Tere for taking the time to let us know. It is nice to know that the training we put our team through is working. It is far better for Paige to know that her time and effort is paying off for her. I see an awesome year in 2009 for Paige. Read on for the great review.
Dear Cary,
I want to give a “HUGE SHOUT OUT & A “BIG THANK YOU” to Paige, Cary O’Brien & the whole staff!!
I came in with my husband when he got his hair cut with Paige, Eddie really like the cut and said Paige would now be cutting his hair from then on. During this time I felt like there was a connection with Paige and she was also going to be the one I wanted to highlight and style my hair.
When I came in for my appointment Paige asked questions about me. What style did I want? How much time do you want to spend styling your hair? etc. She listened tentatively to each answer! Just like she had asked with Eddie. I bought in pictures of my hair highlighted from 5 years ago. She asked questions about the highlights I wanted.
I just want you to know that in the last 5 years, NO ONE had been able to get the color or the cut I wanted right. Paige did what I wanted in highlights, cut and style. In the past 6 weeks I can only count very few off hair days and that was just a me off hair day. All the other days during this time I have styled my hair, worn makeup most of the time and absolutely love my hair.
Now for more good news, I’ve just had my second highlight and cut with Paige again and I am very happy and satisfied with the results. I can tell you that all three of us (Cary O’Brien, Paige and Myself) are in the right lane for a ”Long, Happy, Satisfied, Me Smiling relationship”.
Your staff is wonderful!! I have yet to meet any staff that is as customer oriented, tentative, always so polite and making sure you have what you need; before, during and even after services. A “BIG” Thank You for Jessie!! She’s wonderful!! Always a smile from Jessie wherever you see her!
Sincerely,
Tere Michaels

“The Art of Living an Authentic Life”
Steven & Annie Casciola Speak Out
(From Editor’s Spin, November 2008 Issue)
There is an art to living life well and to being your authentic self. When you follow your heart, you become free to explore your dreams, expand your horizons, and make your own unique imprint on the world. Imagine how diminished our lives would be if artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Georges Seurat, or Frida Kahlo had never picked up a paint brush, if Ludwig van Beethoven had succumbed to the limitations of his deafness, if Rosa Parks had moved to the back of the bus that December day or Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had ignored her courageous act of rebellion. All of these people, and millions more like them, are still known and respected outside of their own time not only for their contributions to humanity but because they lived their lives true to their own spirits.
We live in infinitely more complicated times now, and living an authentic life is something many of us try to squeeze in as we rush off to work, to appointments, to meetings, to events with the kids. It seems there’s always too much going on or too many things in the way, taking up precious space. Excess is everywhere. We have multiple phones with multiple functions to keep us in touch with multitudes of people in multitudes of ways. We have food in the fridge that will spoil before we can eat it, clothes in our closets we’ll never wear, and the latest upgraded must-have electronic doo-dad to replace the older out-dated doo-dads now gathering dust with other discards in the garage.
Keeping our every waking minute full to the brim can be intoxicating. But there is also a price to pay for all this abundance. We are a nation that spends more than it earns, eats more than is healthy, and collects more than we need. Modern American life is geared toward constant activity and accumulation. It is perceived that rest, reduction, and rejuvenation are low-end goals for those with low-end aspirations. They are certainly not the far-reaching goals of the eager and ambitious.
The irony, of course, is that having/doing/spending/consuming too much will eventually hobble you and slow you down - and that means you cannot be who you really are. A healthier choice is to be light and easy, able to move about in your life unencumbered by an ever growing, overwhelming accumulation of physical, mental and spiritual stuff.
I know some of you may say, “Bring it on! I’ll take all I can get - the more the better!” But the reality is that at some point, all that excess can result in diminished enjoyment. However, the other reality is that the exact opposite - living with less - can produce loads of happiness and positive experiences.
This is part of Salon City’s 24/7/365 message for going green and living an authentic life. The less each of us consumes, the more there can be for all of us to enjoy. And so within these pages you’ll find dozens of ideas for beautifying your life with one extraordinary object or ways to inspire your inner artist. We’ve also brought you stories about people living lives true to who they are. Among them are our cover star, Hilarie Burton, star of the CW’s One Tree Hill, and folk music icon Joni Mitchell.
So, in the spirit of less is more, let me leave you with this final succinct thought:
Live simply. Be true to yourself. And make your life a work of art.

I just spent a very interesting and informative morning learning how to be more green. Our salon participated in Harvester Christian Church’s “Day Break” last month and we meet Jennifer Cloud. Jennifer later came into the for a visit and as we were talking she informed me that she worked for a green development company, Gateway Construction & Design. We made an appointment for today and she brought Dan Turpin in with her and we spent some time walking through the salon discussing lighting, flooring, wall covering, paint types, and even washers and dryers. It was great to hear that the fluorescent bulbs I have installed, the natural slate on the walls, and the compositeflooring are a great start. We discussed future plans to do while upgrading and repairing to improve even more. Dan is looking into some very new LCD lighting that will really help our efficiency. We feel it is so important to do everything we can to reduce our carbon footprint and save money at the same time.

Okay, it’s been over a week now and I think I am recovered. From what you ask, what is a pedal and pound? It is a seven and half mile race with two team members and one bicycle. This years event was held in the new St. Charles park of Indian Creek. ( Very nice park) I am happy to report that my good friend and fellow runner Manoj Sood and I took first place in the competition. It took weeks of 4am and midnight super secret training and at least 20 hours of strategy sessions. While one person rides the bike and the other team member runs we had secretly marked the course with paint only we could see using special glasses. We knew to the inch exactly where the change points should be. Competition was tough second place finishers Joan and Dave Bennet came in with a cloud of suspition of blood doping as they were recently in Colorado and high elevation. Third place team of Bill Wagner and Andy Sipka (very fast guys) were the odds on favorite. I think I did notice on the course a few jacks and tacks scattered about. I’m not accusing but I think their team motto was “what ever it takes” I can’t wait to defend our title next year. Find a team mate now and start your training. (writer may have embellished some or all parts of above story. Yet we did win.)

Wow, what fun. Last night we took Jenny, Julie, Heather, Lauren, Kate, Lindsey, Ashley, Rachel, and Danielle to Lumiere Place Hotel Downtown to Fashion Week. Our salon we one of the three salons invited to do the hair on the runway models. In the back room with all the chaos during last minute wardrobe fixes, hair, and makeup being done it was awesome. I was so proud of our team and the efforts they put forth. It is completely different style of hair than what is required of a good salon stylist. I feel so strongly about getting us involved in events that force us to look at hair in the artistic light again. It is not always just about the money, as each person volunteered their time and gave up a night of service which will hurt their paycheck to help. Each on of the team is a better salon stylist today having participated yesterday. I will try to post some pics asap. Rachel took several hundred. Stop by the salon and look at the sketch our artist did during the post event party. It looks so nice I framed it today and will hang it tomorrow. The featured clothing designers last night were Skif, with the most awesome chain-mail looking sweater fabric, Megan Fabulous and her light and airy California lwear look , and Silver Dagger with studded, and printed mod look. Sorry the description is not even close to how cool it really was I was looking at the hair. Saturday some of out team will head down again to work on the Apple Bottom line from Nellie.

I know it is said that it is not proper to talk about politics in the business setting however, when I see people participating I get excited. Here is something I found on the V.P. Debates from the salon world thought you might enjoy.

Vice Presidential Debate
SURVEY RESULTS
Salon City Poll:
Beautymakers say, “Palin has authenticity”
and “Biden has experience” to lead.
Salon City’s ‘Beauty Politic’ Speaks
Beverly Hills, CA 7 October 2008 — Salon City, Inc. announced today the results of the recent Vice Presidential poll conducted by its flagship publication, Salon City magazine, amongst thousands of independent beautymakers, media, main street business owners, and clients.
The two-day online survey concluded Friday, 3 October. With 86% of those surveyed responding, results showed that in overall voting of vice presidential qualifications, Governor Sarah Palin ( R-AK) and Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) ) were tied. The five areas of expertise questioned were: Authenticity, experience, communication style, leadership and vision.
Those responding felt Palin was by far more authentic than Biden ( 84% to 40%), but Biden came back and scored equally impressive numbers beating out Palin in experience (92% to 38%). In other areas: Biden led in leadership ( 68% to 46%) and Palin won for communciation style ( 70% to 52%). When it came to vision, Palin won (61% to 48%).
In the question about moderator objectivity, over 64% felt that Gwen Ifill was either good or excellent in her performance as a moderator. As for the debate’s format, the most visibly lacking quality of the debate by those responding was the lack of a discussion for real solutions to the nation’s challenges.
In other questions: 4% said the debate did motivate them to change their mind about which President they were going to vote for. 67% said the debate reinforced who they were planning to vote for and 21% said it didn’t influence their decision either way.
When asked to rank the most preferred media to watch the debates, CNN edged out CBS and NBC. ABC and FOX followed up strong but slightly behind the rest.
“Once again, the poll demonstrated that the small business community-which includes salon owners and entrepreneurial beauty business owners-cares deeply about the approach and manner our country needs to take,” noted Salon City publisher and editor-in-chief, Steven Casciola. “In our last two polls, we have received a number of insightful comments that show that our ‘Beauty Politic’ indeed has a voice and a sense of what is needed to get our country moving forward again.”
Casciola mentioned last week that “Beautymakers hold a strong level of influence over clients and others in their communities. Taken together, they represent the true Main Street. Many of those clients are also connected to Wall Street, so they have their fingers on the pulse of America-from the grassroots level on up to the top of the political ladder.”
Enjoy your week!

OPI Wins
Allure Magazine
Best of Beauty Awards
The “allure” of OPI continues, as Allure magazine’s beauty editors and experts honored the brand with coveted Best of Beauty Awards in two categories this fall.
The October 2008 issue of the “beauty bible” named OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark (where midnight meets purple) as Best Dark Nail Polish, and Avoplex Cuticle Oil to Go as Best Cuticle Cream.
Allure describes Lincoln Park After Dark (the shade that practically started the dark-nails revolution) as a mix of “eggplant, chocolate, and black” and “more flattering than any of those alone.”
And the magazine loves Avoplex Cuticle Oil to Go because “the creamy formula is hydrating, and the brush-on applicator means the product doesn’t drip down your hands.”
“Of the hundreds of products submitted, Allure chose only 182 to receive Best of Beauty Awards,” says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Executive VP & Artistic Director. “We are certainly honored to be in this group, and strive to continue to offer the kinds of products that beauty mavens love.”
To date, OPI has received 45 Allure Best of Beauty Awards.

This past Saturday we took our team of young professionals to Harvester Christian Church’s “Day Break”. It is a woman’s retreat, and this years title was “The Remarkable You”. Missy, Holly, Katie, and I set up as close to a spa and salon as we could in a classroom. Over all attendance was around 900 ladies. We were able to take no more than 50 guests in each of our three sold out classes to total 150. Missy gave great “Conversation Zones” to two or three ladies each class and then using our Youngblood mineral makeup gave lessons and tips on how to use and look better. Holly gave personal skin analysis and made recommendations on how to treat their skin touching 4-5 per class. Katie chose one lady from each class and after a Conversation Zone with them gave them a hair overhaul. I tried to give tips and advice on how we work at Cary O’Brien’s Design Color Spa. The Day Break committee had arranged for a photographer to take before pics of each model and gave us time on the main stage to show the finished looks and explain what was done. I must say I could not have been more proud of my team. In my career I have had the pleasure to stand on many stages and it was great. These days I get an even bigger charge out of doing events that allow my team to shine by show casing their craft.
